Thank You CYLA

Did anyone else find Pluto?

I did. And I found a lot of other great paintings that were created by City Year Corp Members.

On Friday, April 14, 2017, while some of us were still asleep from a long night of binge-watching NETFLIX, Snapchatting, or playing video games, volunteers in yellow jackets were busy preparing for what was going to be a long day of painting.

The morning began with their daily rituals and call to PT with “Spirit, Discipline, Purpose, and Pride.” Our very own Nightingale Leadership students participated in the warm up routine and were excited to be active in the activities.

Their mission was to complete all murals and paintings by 3pm, so time was important. Once warmed up and ready to go, over 300 City Year members, families, and volunteers, broke up into 25 smaller groups to take on different sections of the school and paint murals dedicated to motivating and inspiring students. These murals consisted of various University logos, business collages, best books of all times, and quotes by celebrity and inspiring leaders. But of all the murals painted, my favorite was that of our very own Coach Acevedo, who for over decades has encouraged our students to succeed.

“Rule #1 - Never Quit. Rule # 2 - Always Follow Rule #1.”

– Thomas Acevedo, Nightingale Kinesiology Teacher.

As the long day ended, the corp members began to rinse their brushes, put lids over paint cans, and finished the clean up work. Little by little they quietly drove-off of our campus until the parking lots were once again empty. Their gift – wonderful memories for us to cherish.

Thank you to all City Year LA Members, families, friends, and volunteers who came out to Nightingale Middle School.
